ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A woven tray with natural, organic patterning - handmade in Rwanda. Hand-gathered banana leaf is stitched around banana-stalk coils with handmade needles, and weaving leaves from different banana varieties creates the natural two-tone contrast - no dyes needed. Cut-out handles woven into the rim make it easy to carry. The Grand anchors an ottoman or coffee table and doubles as a serving tray for drinks and snacks; the Medium styles a bookshelf, console, or bathroom vanity.

  • Sold individually: choose Medium (12" x 12" x 2") or Grand (20" x 18" x 4")
  • Handles: cut-out handles woven into the rim on both sizes
  • Material: hand-gathered banana leaf and stalk
  • Pattern: natural two-tone contrast from different banana-leaf varieties
  • Signed: each tray includes an artisan tag with the maker's name and cooperative

Handwoven by Rwandan artisans through Azizi Life, a Fair Trade Federation member where 760+ makers work in independent cooperatives. Each tray is unique.

Azizi Life works with more than 760 artisans across about 60 cooperatives in rural Rwanda, each group specializing in traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Every piece is made by hand from local natural materials - sisal, forest grasses, banana leaf, and local wood - so small variations are part of the craft. Through fair-trade partnerships, the work provides steady income for artisan families and helps fund community programs like adult literacy.

Q: What is included?
A: One handwoven tray in your chosen size - Medium (about 12 x 12 x 2 inches) or Grand (about 20 x 18 x 4 inches). Each tray arrives with a signed artisan tag featuring the maker's name and cooperative.

Q: What size works best on an ottoman or coffee table?
A: The Grand at 20 x 18 inches anchors most ottomans and coffee tables with room for books, candles, and a drink. The Medium suits bookshelves, consoles, and bathroom vanities. Both sizes have cut-out handles woven into the rim for easy carrying.

Q: What is it made of?
A: Hand-gathered banana leaves threaded around banana-stalk coils with a handmade needle - renewable and biodegradable. The two-tone contrast comes from leaves of different banana varieties, so no two trays match exactly.

Q: Can the tray get wet?
A: It handles light moisture and serving drinks in glasses, but should not be submerged. Dry in the sun after any spills.

Q: Who makes it?
A: Artisans in rural Rwanda working with Azizi Life, a Fair Trade Federation member partnering with 760+ makers across about 60 independent cooperatives.
