ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A large handwoven cotton bath towel with bands of geometric pattern and fringed ends. Each of four colors comes two ways: a solid body with the pattern in ivory, or an ivory body with the pattern in color - bronze, charcoal, stone or teal.

The cotton is spun by hand and woven on traditional looms into a lightweight, breathable cloth that dries quickly and gets softer with every wash. At 37 x 70 inches it is bigger than most bath towels - big enough to wrap up in after a bath, a sauna or a swim, and light enough to pack for travel.

  • Size - 37 x 70 inches (95 x 180 cm)
  • Fiber - 100% Ethiopian cotton, hand-spun
  • Pattern - geometric bands, hand-picked on the loom
  • Finish - fringed ends
  • Care - machine wash cold, tumble dry low, iron, do not bleach

How to read the color names: the first color is the body of the towel, the second is the pattern. Bronze/Ivory is a bronze towel with ivory pattern; Ivory/Bronze is the reverse.

It's the bath towel to our Woven Border hand towel - same maker, same pattern, and all eight colors come in both, so the two hang together as a set. There's a matching bath mat too, in stone, charcoal or bronze.

Woven in a Fair Trade workshop in Ethiopia that has been woman-owned for over twenty years - a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. More than 100 artisans are employed there at equitable pay.

100% natural fiber. Handwoven, so weave and color vary a little from piece to piece. Made in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This towel comes from a workshop in Addis Ababa that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs more than 100 artisans at equitable pay.

The cotton is spun by hand, then woven on traditional looms, with the geometric bands picked into the cloth by hand. Six or seven artisans work on each towel: spinning the weft takes one woman a full day, dyeing and weaving take about half a day each, and fringing and finishing another half day - about two and a half days of paid work in every towel. The design is named after the Genale River in southeastern Ethiopia.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain. It is also a verified social enterprise, and it is assessed by independent auditors.

What's the difference between Bronze/Ivory and Ivory/Bronze?

The first color is the body of the towel and the second is the pattern. Bronze/Ivory is a bronze towel with ivory bands; Ivory/Bronze is an ivory towel with bronze bands. The same goes for charcoal, stone and teal.

How big is it?

37 x 70 inches (95 x 180 cm) - larger than most bath towels, so it wraps all the way around you. It also works as a beach, sauna or travel towel.

Does it match the Woven Border hand towel?

Yes. Same maker, same pattern, and all eight colors come in both.

How does it feel?

Lightweight, soft and breathable, and it dries quickly. It is a flatter, lighter cloth than a waffle or terry towel, and it gets softer the more it is washed.

Is it Fair Trade?

Yes. The workshop is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. It has been woman-owned for over twenty years.

Where is it made?

Ethiopia.

BUSH & BRIAR

Nature's Way is how I decide what earns a place in the shop. Six things, and every one of them is checkable on the product page above.

  1. Natural materials, named - I state the actual material, like milulu grass, baby alpaca or Ethiopian cotton, rather than a vague adjective.
  2. Made by hand - woven or carved by hand, not pressed, molded or machine-made.
  3. A named place - the region it was made in, taken from the maker's own labelling.
  4. From me or from the maker - some pieces I stock and pack myself in California; others ship directly from the maker who made them. Either way, I chose every piece, and I'm your point of contact for questions, orders and returns.
  5. Made in small batches - handmade, never mass-produced, so stock can run low.
  6. No claim I cannot show you - if I cannot verify it, it does not go on the page.

Pieces I stock myself ship from my workspace in Southern California, usually within 1–2 business days.

Other pieces ship directly from the maker who made them, which can take longer. If you need something by a certain date, email me at support@bushandbriar.com before you order and I'll tell you what to expect.

If your order includes pieces from more than one place, they may arrive in separate packages, each with its own tracking.

Shipping is free on orders over $70. Orders under $70 ship for a flat $6.

I currently ship within the continental United States.

If something is not right, email support@bushandbriar.com within 30 days of delivery. Items should be unused and in original condition.

If your order arrives damaged, send photos within 14 days and I will replace or refund it at no cost to you.
