ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A handwoven table runner in extra-thick hand-spun Ethiopian cotton, in six colors: copper, bronze, gold, cedar (a deep green), steel blue and navy.

Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and that is the whole point - the slight variation in thickness is what gives the cloth its texture. The pattern is laid into the loom by hand during weaving rather than printed on afterward, so it runs through the runner instead of sitting on the surface. Each end is finished with a short hand-tied fringe.

The pattern is called Rift Valley, after the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia. The cotton is grown there, spun by hand, and dyed in small batches before it goes on the loom.

It is sized for a table about five feet long, where it hangs about five inches over each end. On a six-foot table it stops just short of the ends.

  • Size - 18 x 70 inches (45 x 180 cm)
  • Fiber - 100% Ethiopian cotton, extra-thick hand-spun
  • Ends - short hand-tied fringe
  • Care - machine wash cold, tumble dry low, iron, do not bleach

Woven in a Fair Trade workshop in Ethiopia that has been woman-owned for over twenty years - a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. More than 100 artisans are employed there at equitable pay.

100% natural fiber. Handwoven, so weave tension and color depth vary a little from piece to piece, and it softens with every wash. Made in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This runner comes from a workshop there that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs more than 100 artisans at equitable pay.

The cotton is grown in Ethiopia and spun by hand. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and the extra-thick yarn used here exaggerates that: the surface has ridges and slubs a mill-spun runner does not have. The yarn is dyed in small batches before it goes anywhere near the loom.

The pattern is laid into the loom by hand while the runner is being woven, so it is part of the cloth rather than a layer printed onto it. The fringe at each end is tied by hand. The pattern is called Rift Valley, after the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain. It is also a verified social enterprise, and it is assessed by independent auditors.

What size table does it suit?

It is 18 by 70 inches, sized for a table about five feet long, where it hangs about five inches over each end. On a six-foot table it stops just short of the ends, and on anything longer it sits as a center strip.

Is it Fair Trade?

Yes. The workshop is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. It has been woman-owned for over twenty years.

Can I put it in the washing machine?

Yes. Cold water, tumble dry low. There is no coating or backing to come apart, so it washes like any cotton cloth.

Does it match the napkins?

The colorways are built to sit together across the table linens rather than match exactly. Copper runs through several of the pieces.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not identical. The cotton is spun and dyed by hand, so texture and color depth vary between pieces.

Where is it made?

Ethiopia.

BUSH & BRIAR

Nature's Way is how I decide what earns a place in the shop. Six things, and every one of them is checkable on the product page above.

  1. Natural materials, named - I state the actual material, like milulu grass, baby alpaca or Ethiopian cotton, rather than a vague adjective.
  2. Made by hand - woven or carved by hand, not pressed, molded or machine-made.
  3. A named place - the region it was made in, taken from the maker's own labelling.
  4. From me or from the maker - some pieces I stock and pack myself in California; others ship directly from the maker who made them. Either way, I chose every piece, and I'm your point of contact for questions, orders and returns.
  5. Made in small batches - handmade, never mass-produced, so stock can run low.
  6. No claim I cannot show you - if I cannot verify it, it does not go on the page.

Pieces I stock myself ship from my workspace in Southern California, usually within 1–2 business days.

Other pieces ship directly from the maker who made them, which can take longer. If you need something by a certain date, email me at support@bushandbriar.com before you order and I'll tell you what to expect.

If your order includes pieces from more than one place, they may arrive in separate packages, each with its own tracking.

Shipping is free on orders over $70. Orders under $70 ship for a flat $6.

I currently ship within the continental United States.

If something is not right, email support@bushandbriar.com within 30 days of delivery. Items should be unused and in original condition.

If your order arrives damaged, send photos within 14 days and I will replace or refund it at no cost to you.
