A handwoven tea towel in hand-spun Ethiopian cotton, in cedar (a deep green), copper or bronze.

Hand-spun cotton takes up water in a way a smooth machine-spun towel does not, and it gets softer and more absorbent every time you wash it. Hemmed on all four sides, with a loop so it hangs off a rail or an oven door.

The pattern is called Rift Valley, after the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia. The cotton is grown there, spun by hand, and dyed in small batches before it goes on the loom.

Pairs well with

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This towel comes from a workshop there that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs hundreds of artisans at equitable pay.

The cotton is grown in Ethiopia and spun by hand. That matters more on a towel than on anything else in the collection: hand-spun yarn has an uneven, open structure that holds water, which is why these get more absorbent rather than less as they age.

The yarn is dyed in small batches before weaving, and each towel is hemmed on all four sides with a loop added for hanging. The pattern is called Rift Valley, after the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain. It is also a verified social enterprise, and it is assessed by independent auditors.

  • Skip fabric softener - it coats the fiber and cuts absorbency.

Is it actually absorbent, or just decorative?

Both. Hand-spun cotton has an open, uneven structure that takes up water well, and it improves with washing. Skip the fabric softener and it will keep doing that.
