ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A handwoven basket from the Iringa region of southern Tanzania, worked in milulu grass with bands of auburn-dyed fiber running through the natural pale grass.

Every one is banded differently. The weaver sets the pattern as the basket grows, so the width, spacing, and placement of the auburn shift from piece to piece. Some carry narrow lines scattered through cream grass. Others carry wide rust blocks or diagonal chevrons. The basket you receive will not match the photograph exactly. That is how these are made, and it is why no two rooms end up with the same one.

A plaited braid finishes the top edge. The body tapers from a rounded base to a slightly flared mouth and stands upright empty or full. The three sizes nest inside one another, and they nest across colorways as well, so a striped Medium drops inside a Natural or Auburn Large.

Iringa sits in the southern highlands of Tanzania, where milulu grass grows through the wetlands.

The grass is cut, dried, and worked by hand, row upon row from the base upward. The colored bands are not applied to a finished basket. Dyed grass is carried into the weave as the basket is built, which is why a band cannot be repositioned once it is laid and why the pattern belongs to the weaver rather than to a specification sheet.

Two baskets of the same size from the same batch will not carry the same banding. We think that is the best argument for owning one.

Approximate weight: Medium 1.2 lb, Large 2 lb, X-Large 2.5 lb. Handwoven, so dimensions vary within roughly an inch. All three sizes nest inside one another, and they nest across colorways as well. Banding varies by piece and is not consistent between sizes.

  • Dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush.
  • Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, then let it air dry completely.
  • Do not soak, submerge, or machine wash. Natural fiber loses its shape when saturated.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sun, which dries and fades the fiber over time.
  • If you plant in it, use a waterproof liner or drop a nursery pot inside.

Will my basket look exactly like the photo?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. The banding is set by hand as the basket is woven, so width, spacing, and placement differ on every piece. The photograph shows one example, not the one you will receive. Message us before ordering and we will photograph the actual basket in stock.

Do the three sizes match each other?

They share the material, the shape, and the auburn palette, but not the pattern. If you want a matched-looking set, buy them together and ask us to pick the closest three.

Do the sizes nest?

Yes. Medium fits inside Large, and Large fits inside X-Large. They also nest across colorways, so a striped Medium sits inside a Natural or Auburn Large. You can build a set in one color or mix them.

Can I put a plant in it?

Yes, with a liner or a nursery pot inside. Water sitting against the fiber will stain and eventually weaken it, and it can bleed the dyed bands.

Tanzania, in the Iringa region.
