ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A handwoven basket from the Iringa region of southern Tanzania, made from milulu grass and left undyed.

The color is the grass itself: pale sage and cream, shifting tone where each stalk was cut and dried. A plaited braid finishes the top edge and holds the basket's shape. The body tapers from a rounded base to a gently flared mouth, so it stands upright whether it is full or empty.

Firm enough for folded blankets, firewood, or a potted plant. Light enough to move between rooms with one hand.

The three sizes nest inside one another, and they nest across colorways as well, so a Natural Medium drops inside an Auburn or Auburn Stripe Large. A set takes up the footprint of the largest basket when you are not using all of them.

Iringa sits in the southern highlands of Tanzania, where milulu grass grows through the wetlands.

The grass is cut, dried, and then worked entirely by hand: row upon row from the base upward, with a plaited braid worked around the top to finish the rim and hold the basket's shape. Nothing is molded or pressed.

That is why the sizes run in ranges rather than exact numbers, and why the color shifts from one basket to the next depending on when the grass was cut and how it dried.

Approximate weight: Medium 1.2 lb, Large 2 lb, X-Large 2.5 lb. Handwoven, so dimensions vary within roughly an inch. All three sizes nest inside one another, and they nest across colorways as well.

  • Dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush.
  • Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, then let it air dry completely.
  • Do not soak, submerge, or machine wash. Natural fiber loses its shape when saturated.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sun, which dries and fades the fiber over time.
  • If you plant in it, use a waterproof liner or drop a nursery pot inside.

Will my basket look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not identical. These are undyed, so the grass tone varies between pieces and the weave is never machine-even. Shape and size are consistent across the range; color depth is not.

Can I put a plant in it?

Yes, with a liner or a nursery pot inside. There is no waterproof barrier in the weave, so water sitting against the fiber will stain and eventually weaken it.

Do the sizes nest?

Yes. Medium fits inside Large, and Large fits inside X-Large. They also nest across colorways, so a Natural Medium sits inside an Auburn or Auburn Stripe Large. You can build a set in one color or mix them.
