ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A handwoven vessel from the Buhera district of Zimbabwe, twined from local cane over a framework of ribs and left undyed.

The shape follows the traditional Buhera storage form: a wide, round belly drawing up to a narrow neck and a rolled rim. Because it is built by hand over a rib frame rather than thrown or molded, the profile is never perfectly symmetrical, and the surface carries the pale greige and weathered grey of the cane itself.

Large enough to stand on the floor. It works as a sculptural piece on its own, or as a vessel for dried stems and branches. The cane runs warm, so a paler grass basket set beside it reads cooler and lighter, and the two shapes contrast rather than compete: one closed and sculptural, one open and useful.

Buhera baskets are measured around the contour, from the base up and over the curve to the lip, because a straight vertical height is misleading on a round form.

Buhera is a district in Zimbabwe where basketry is worked in local cane rather than grass.

The technique builds the vessel over a framework of ribs, with finer strands twined tightly around them. That is what produces the close ridged surface, and it is what lets the form swell outward and then draw back in at the neck, which a coiled basket cannot easily do.

Because the shape is built by hand over a frame rather than turned on a wheel, no two vessels share a profile. It is also why the traditional way of sizing them is to measure around the contour instead of straight up the side.

Buhera baskets are sized by contour: measured from the base, up and over the curve of the body, to the lip.

Approximate weight: 3 lb. Individually made, so height, widest diameter, and neck opening vary from piece to piece.

  • Dust with a dry cloth or a soft brush.
  • Spot clean with a barely damp cloth, then let it air dry completely.
  • Do not soak, submerge, or machine wash. Natural fiber loses its shape when saturated.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sun, which dries and fades the fiber over time.
  • If you plant in it, use a waterproof liner or drop a nursery pot inside.

What does contour measurement mean?

It is the distance measured along the surface of the basket, from the base up and over the curve to the lip, rather than straight up the side. On a round vessel a vertical height understates the size, so this is the traditional measure.

Can I put water or fresh flowers in it?

No. The weave is open cane with no waterproof barrier. Use it for dried stems and branches, or set a sealed vessel inside it.

Will mine look like the photo?

The material, technique, and general form will match. The exact profile will not. Each one is built by hand over its own frame.
