ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A handwoven cotton table runner in blocks of color that run the full spectrum - rose and red through gold and green to blue and plum - with fringed ends.

It is woven on two warps, one black and one natural, so each band of color shows in two shades, and the weft is extra-thick hand-spun Ethiopian cotton, which keeps the colors deep and gives the runner weight on the table. The maker named it Kalam, the Amharic word for color.

  • Size - 18 x 70 inches (45 x 180 cm)
  • Fiber - 100% Ethiopian cotton, extra-thick hand-spun weft
  • Weave - blocks of color on a black and a natural warp
  • Finish - fringed ends
  • Care - machine wash cold, tumble dry, cool iron

It shares its colors with our Rainbow Stripe hand towel, which works as a kitchen towel too.

Runner only. The tableware in the photos is there for styling and is not included.

Woven in a Fair Trade workshop in Ethiopia that has been woman-owned for over twenty years - a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. More than 100 artisans are employed there at equitable pay.

100% natural fiber. Handwoven and dyed in small batches, so color and weave vary a little from piece to piece. Made in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This runner is woven by hand in Addis Ababa at a workshop that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs more than 100 artisans at equitable pay.

It is woven on traditional looms with two warps, one black and one natural, and an extra-thick hand-spun cotton weft that runs through every color in the workshop's palette. Where the colors cross the two warps, each block shows in two shades.

The name Kalam is the Amharic word for color.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain. It is also a verified social enterprise, and it is assessed by independent auditors.

How long is it?

70 x 18 inches (180 x 45 cm). Runners usually hang about 6 inches over each end, so it fits a table about 5 feet long; on a longer table it sits in the middle.

Does it match the Rainbow Stripe towels?

Yes. Same maker and the same palette of colors, so it goes with both the Rainbow Stripe hand towel and the bath & beach towel. The layout differs a little: the runner is woven in blocks of color, the towels in bands with fine ivory stripes.

Can it go in the dryer?

Yes. Machine wash cold and tumble dry. A cool iron smooths it if needed.

Is it Fair Trade?

Yes. The workshop is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization and a verified social enterprise. It has been woman-owned for over twenty years.

Where is it made?

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BUSH & BRIAR

Nature's Way is how I decide what earns a place in the shop. Six things, and every one of them is checkable on the product page above.

  1. Natural materials, named - I state the actual material, like milulu grass, baby alpaca or Ethiopian cotton, rather than a vague adjective.
  2. Made by hand - woven or carved by hand, not pressed, molded or machine-made.
  3. A named place - the region it was made in, taken from the maker's own labelling.
  4. From me or from the maker - some pieces I stock and pack myself in California; others ship directly from the maker who made them. Either way, I chose every piece, and I'm your point of contact for questions, orders and returns.
  5. Made in small batches - handmade, never mass-produced, so stock can run low.
  6. No claim I cannot show you - if I cannot verify it, it does not go on the page.

Pieces I stock myself ship from my workspace in Southern California, usually within 1–2 business days.

Other pieces ship directly from the maker who made them, which can take longer. If you need something by a certain date, email me at support@bushandbriar.com before you order and I'll tell you what to expect.

If your order includes pieces from more than one place, they may arrive in separate packages, each with its own tracking.

Shipping is free on orders over $70. Orders under $70 ship for a flat $6.

I currently ship within the continental United States.

If something is not right, email support@bushandbriar.com within 30 days of delivery. Items should be unused and in original condition.

If your order arrives damaged, send photos within 14 days and I will replace or refund it at no cost to you.
