A handwoven table runner in extra-thick hand-spun Ethiopian cotton, in copper or cedar.

Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and that is the whole point - the slight variation in thickness is what gives the cloth its texture. The pattern is laid into the loom by hand during weaving rather than printed on afterward, so it runs through the runner instead of sitting on the surface.

Rift Valley takes its name from the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia. The cotton is grown there, spun by hand, and dyed in small batches before it goes on the loom.

At 18 by 70 inches it runs nearly the full length of a six-foot table, or hangs about five inches over each end of a five-foot one.

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This runner comes from a workshop there that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs hundreds of artisans at equitable pay.

The cotton is grown in Ethiopia and spun by hand. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and the extra-thick yarn used here exaggerates that: the surface has ridges and slubs a mill-spun runner does not have. The yarn is dyed in small batches before it goes anywhere near the loom.

The pattern is laid into the loom by hand while the runner is being woven, so it is part of the cloth rather than a layer printed onto it. Rift Valley takes its name from the valley that cuts through central Ethiopia.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain. Can I put it in the washing machine?

Yes. Cold water, tumble dry low. There is no coating or backing to come apart, so it washes like any cotton cloth.

Does it match the napkins?

The colorways are built to sit together across the table linens rather than match exactly. Copper runs through several of the pieces.

Will it look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not identical. The cotton is spun and dyed by hand, so texture and color depth vary between pieces.

Orders ship from our workspace in Southern California, usually within 1-2 business days.

Textiles ship for $6, free over $100. Baskets ship for $16 to $28 depending on size, free over $150. Because the baskets nest inside one another, more than one size travels in a single carton and arrives together.

If something is not right, email support@bushandbriar.com within 30 days of delivery. Items should be unused and in original condition.
