ABOUT THIS PRODUCT

A thick, heavy handwoven cotton throw in a classic herringbone, finished with tied fringe in natural white. The herringbone is woven on a four-harness loom, which makes a dense cloth with real weight to it - the heaviest of the cotton throws we carry.

Its name, Mechot, means cozy and comforting in Amharic, the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia.

Bronze is a warm caramel, mint is a soft sage green, and almond is a pale sand. All three are finished with natural white fringe.

  • Size - 51 x 78 inches (130 x 200 cm)
  • Fiber - 100% Ethiopian cotton, hand-spun
  • Weave - herringbone on a four-harness loom, tied fringe
  • Care - machine wash cold, tumble dry

Woven in a Fair Trade workshop in Addis Ababa that has been woman-owned for over twenty years - a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organization. Handwoven, so weave tension and color depth vary a little from piece to piece. Made in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has one of the oldest weaving traditions in East Africa. This throw comes from a workshop in Addis Ababa that has been woman-owned for more than twenty years and employs hundreds of artisans at equitable pay.

The cotton is grown in Ethiopia and spun by hand. The herringbone is woven on a traditional four-harness loom, a technique that makes a thick, heavy cloth, and each end is finished with tied fringe.

Mechot means cozy and comforting in Amharic, the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia.

The workshop has been a member of the World Fair Trade Organization since 2009 and a guaranteed member since 2019, fully verified against the ten principles of Fair Trade across its business and its supply chain.

BUSH & BRIAR

Nature's Way is how I decide what earns a place in the shop. Six things, and every one of them is checkable on the product page above.

  1. Natural Materials, named — I state the actual material, milulu grass, pure alpaca fiber, etc. rather than a vague adjective.
  2. Woven by hand — not pressed, molded, or machine-made.
  3. A named place — the region it was made in, taken from the maker's own labelling.
  4. Bought outright — I own what I sell and pack it myself. Nothing here is drop-shipped.
  5. Small quantities — often a single piece per size, because that is how it arrives.
  6. No claim I cannot show you — if I cannot verify it, it does not go on the page.

Orders ship from my workspace in Southern California, usually within 1–2 business days.

Shipping is free on orders over $70. Orders under $70 ship for a flat $6.

I currently ship within the continental United States.

If something is not right, email support@bushandbriar.com within 30 days of delivery. Items should be unused and in original condition.

If your order arrives damaged, send photos within 14 days and I will replace or refund it at no cost to you.
